Visio Announces Visio Enterprise 5.0

New Tool Delivers Deep, Integrated Support for Automated Network Design and Documentation, Database Modeling and Software Engineering

SEATTLE, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced Visio® Enterprise 5.0, the first integrated, multifunction software tool designed for IT professionals who develop, manage and maintain enterprise information systems. Built on the strong foundation of Visio Professional, the award-winning, industry-standard for IT diagramming and documentation, Visio Enterprise offers the depth users need in each IT domain while also providing a single, robust, cross-functional solution for enterprise-level design, modeling and documentation. As a comprehensive IT software program, Visio Enterprise is expected to further solidify the company's position as the standard for creating, storing and exchanging graphical information in business.

Visio Enterprise greatly extends Visio's reach in IT design and documentation by offering the powerful tools customers requested in three main IT domains. For network design and documentation, Visio Enterprise provides automatic network documentation, the industry's most comprehensive equipment library and directory services support. For software engineering, it provides full UML 1.2 support including reverse engineering of Microsoft Visual C++ and Visual Basic code, and integration with other enterprise tools through Microsoft Repository. And for database design, Visio Enterprise provides flexible modeling, complete re-engineering, migration and code support for the leading enterprise database management systems.

"The introduction of Visio Enterprise represents a natural extension of Visio's diagramming expertise into the design and modeling of complex software, databases and networks," said Jeremy Jaech, president and CEO of Visio Corp. "Visio Enterprise takes advantage of Visio's leading-edge technology and its position as a pervasive standard in business to deliver a more effective way to manage the networks, databases and applications critical to an organization's day-to-day operations.

"At present, the IT tools market is dominated by expensive, complex and often incompatible point products that create output which is difficult to share and requires much training to interpret," said Michael Barnes, senior analyst at Hurwitz Consulting Group. "IT organizations can benefit greatly from more accessible modeling tools that don't require a steep learning curve and provide support for designing, modeling and documenting information systems ranging from existing network infrastructures to the database systems that run on top of them."

Tools for Network Design and Documentation

Specifically suited for network professionals, Visio Enterprise facilitates physical, logical and wide-area network designs. The product's SNMP-based, layer 3 AutoDiscovery™ technology discovers and maps the logical connectivity of a network, beginning with the address of a single seed router and building a comprehensive database that includes network device and connectivity information. Visio Enterprise integrates this AutoDiscovery technology with the diagramming capabilities of Visio Professional and the 14,000-shape Visio Network Equipment library to automatically represent discovered devices with port-level detail. Integrating these capabilities produces enormous time savings by automating the three basic tasks of network management: identifying what equipment is connected to the network, documenting it and then keeping it up to date.

Diagramming support for Microsoft Active Directory and NT Domain structures as well as automatic generation of Novell Directory Services™ trees from an NDS™ database enables another unique view of the network architecture. "With 40 million users and many customers with 50,000 or more users in their NDS trees, the timing is perfect for a top-quality directory design and documentation tool from Visio," said Michael Simpson, director of marketing at Novell Inc. "We are excited about the delivery of Visio Enterprise so the many NDS managers and consultants can build accurate, detailed views of their network architecture, and plan more proactively for the future."

Tools for Software and Database Design

Visio Enterprise 5.0 extends Visio's capabilities in application and database design, delivering the deep-level functionality demanded by software and database designers. Features include support for the full range of UML 1.2 diagram types. Visio Enterprise supports reverse engineering of Microsoft Visual C++ and Visual Basic code into UML models, and integration with other enterprise tools via Microsoft Repository 2.0.

Visio Enterprise allows for the design of databases using standard technologies and multiple object-oriented notations. For example, users can model in relational, IDEF1X and other popular notations. The product supports forward and reverse engineering of databases for easy maintenance and updating of existing DBMSs, and migration between DBMSs from the leading enterprise database vendors including IBM Corp., Oracle Systems Corp., Informix Software Inc. and Microsoft Corp. The product enables model import and export via the Microsoft Data Warehousing Framework, the up-and-coming standard for exchanging database schema. Users can also read and write PLATINUM ERwin and InfoModeler® models, as well as Visio Professional 5.0 database diagrams. In sum, the capabilities included in Visio Enterprise address the complexities of real-world environments with applications built using various programming languages, multiple databases and global networks.

Visual Modeling Coalition

Visio also announced today its formation of the Visual Modeling Coalition, a group whose mission is to support tool interoperability and the use of standard notations using a common repository to accurately reflect and facilitate user requirements. There are two levels of membership to accommodate integrated solutions vendors and consulting and training providers. Each level supports the Visual Modeling Coalition value proposition and offers numerous opportunities for marketing and certification.
