Visio Announces New Product Will Support Visual Studio 6.0

Highly Anticipated New Product to Offer Logical, Component-Based Design and Modeling Capabilities

SEATTLE, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced that its new product, code-named "Venice," will feature capabilities to complement and extend the functionality of the Microsoft® Visual Studio™ development system version 6.0. "Venice," scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of this year, will comprise a complete graphical design and modeling tool for IT professionals who manage team-based development and maintenance of enterprise information systems. Its support for Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 will facilitate reverse engineering of existing Microsoft Visual Basic®- and Visual C++®-based code into UML diagrams, as well as extend UML modeling functionality in Visual Studio 6.0.

The powerful enterprise-modeling capabilities of "Venice" will dramatically extend the software and database design functionality currently offered in Visio Corp.'s Visio® Professional software product and will incorporate recently acquired technologies from InfoModelers Inc. and Kaspia Systems Inc.

"Unlike traditional design and modeling tools that focus on a discrete segment of the IT market, the 'Venice' toolkit will provide an integrated software and database modeling environment. 'Venice' will utilize Microsoft Repository services for application interoperability and effective modeling across architectural layers," said Anthony Bloesch, director of software and database modeling solutions at Visio. "The feature set in 'Venice' complements the Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) and will provide exciting, incremental value to the visual design capabilities within Visual Studio."

"Visio's newest product, 'Venice,' offers a unique level of design and modeling capabilities that build on the open, extensible environment of Visual Studio to make rapid application development a reality," said Paul Gross, vice president of development tools at Microsoft Corp.

Extending the Value of Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0

"Venice" will extend the functionality in Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise Edition by providing an add-in to the Microsoft Visual Basic and Visual C++ development environments that reverse-engineers existing code into UML models, which communicate a higher-level view more easily understood than the code itself. This add-in capability takes advantage of information contained in the Visual C++ and Visual Basic environments to deliver an unprecedented level of accurate reverse-engineering support not achievable by referring to the code independently. "Venice" will also provide logical, component-based application design from within the Visual Basic and Visual C++ interfaces based on full support for UML 1.2 notation.

Technology acquired by Visio this year from InfoModelers and Kaspia Systems will be included in "Venice" to offer database design and enterprise network discovery capabilities, thus serving the spectrum of IT management needs. In summary, "Venice" will offer an intuitive and affordable way to design and model enterprise databases, software applications and networks. "Venice" will be priced at approximately $1,000 (U.S.).
