Visio Exceeds Expectations for Shipments of IntelliCAD 98

New Release, Technical Support Options Enhance Trial Use and Adoption of Autodesk AutoCAD-Compatible Application

SEATTLE, July 23 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced that the first three months of sales for its new Microsoft Windows-based CAD product, IntelliCAD® 98 by Visio, have exceeded company expectations. A vendor of drawing and diagramming tools for the entire enterprise, Visio has sold nearly 12,000 IntelliCAD 98 licenses during the June 1998 quarter, producing over $3 million in gross revenue. IntelliCAD's early sales volume demonstrates an impressive initial acceptance for a new technical software product, driven largely by the product's unparalleled compatibility with Autodesk AutoCAD files, commands and applications, along with a special introductory price of $349 (U.S.). Visio anticipates that the early data regarding IntelliCAD sales, coupled with a new IntelliCAD service pack and a special technical support promotion, will translate into a firm and growing foothold in the PC CAD marketplace.

"Visio is enjoying a greater level of corporate trial and adoption than we anticipated by this point in the product's life span, coupled with excellent retail sell-through," said John Forbes, vice president and general manager, technical products at Visio. "This indicates that over the past three months, we've created a high level of awareness and helped our customers test the product and evaluate how it fits within their CAD environments. Visio has also successfully demonstrated IntelliCAD's unprecedented compatibility with AutoCAD, which will enable its widespread adoption in production applications."

"My company initially believed that IntelliCAD would help us extend our drafting tools onto the desktops of occasional or casual users," said Michael Byrne, IT manager at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia-based T&T Konsult. "After using IntelliCAD 98 for over two months, we found that it served the needs of our 'power' users as well. IntelliCAD 98 is an excellent complement to our AutoCAD seats, providing necessary compatibility without crippling our CAD customization capabilities."

New Update for IntelliCAD 98 Available

Visio also announced the immediate availability of its latest update to IntelliCAD 98, known as the Release 1.0b service pack. Available for download today at http://www.visio.com/support/icad/updates.html, this free service pack contains performance enhancements, bug fixes and new features. Visio developed the specific new features and improvements in IntelliCAD 98 Release 1.0b by prioritizing the volume of feedback provided by IntelliCAD users. Based on customer comments collected by Visio technical support personnel, as well as by electronic postings on the IntelliCAD Digital Roundtable ( http://www.visio.com/products/intellicad/sig/ ), IntelliCAD 98 Release 1.0b addresses the following areas:

  • Performance enhancements. Release 1.0b delivers a 40 percent improvement in drawing regeneration speed and a 30 percent improvement in the time IntelliCAD takes to redraw the screen, plus improvements in drawing load times and LISP application load times.
  • Bug fixes. Release 1.0b improves stability and memory management, and addresses issues in SDS and LISP functionality that arose in developer input. With over 275 third-party applications announced to date for the IntelliCAD platform, Visio has worked closely with third-party developers to address their specific issues as they port their AutoCAD-based applications to the lower-cost IntelliCAD platform.
  • New capabilities. Release 1.0b now displays and plots AutoCAD R14 associative hatching, plots in 256 colors, includes improved support for the VPLAYER command, and supports direct distance entry. Visio has enhanced the Drawing Explorer™, as well to reflect new VPLAYER, dimension style and drawing purge functionality. This release also supports cut, copy and paste of entities between IntelliCAD and AutoCAD via the Windows clipboard. Entities migrate between the CAD programs as either Microsoft ActiveX objects or native drawing entities.

Affirming IntelliCAD's tight 32-bit Windows integration and complete ActiveX functionality, the Microsoft-authorized testing firm Veritest Inc. has certified IntelliCAD 98 Release 1.0b as fully Windows 98 Logo-compliant.

"Visio gets as close as possible to our CAD customers, listening to their concerns and quickly acting upon the new features they've requested," Forbes said. "Only four months after the initial release, Visio has made dramatic enhancements to IntelliCAD based on user needs. We're going to continue this cycle of rapidly and continually improving the product based on that user input, widening the superior value proposition that IntelliCAD offers."

Extended IntelliCAD Technical Support Promotion

With the announcement of IntelliCAD 98 Release 1.0b, Visio has also extended its free end-user technical support period for all registered IntelliCAD customers. Routinely offered for 30 days from the date of the first support call, free technical support is now available to IntelliCAD customers in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia through the end of 1998. Visio is offering this free technical support to encourage trial users of IntelliCAD to fully explore potential integration, training and mixed platform environment issues with the professional assistance of Visio support engineers. With free unlimited technical support through the end of 1998 and a 60-day money back guarantee†, even more prospective IntelliCAD users can now fully evaluate IntelliCAD risk-free. Visio offers technical support for registered customers by telephone, fax and online access (United States and Canada only).

"It's been Visio's experience so far that many companies initially purchased a few licenses of IntelliCAD, then distributed them to their CAD power users for evaluation," Forbes said. "By offering free support through the end of 1998, Visio helps those evaluators completely and thoroughly test-drive the program and get immediate professional help with any issues that may arise. By facilitating the evaluation process, Visio is confident that our customers will deploy IntelliCAD to those drafters and adjacent users that lack a dedicated or authorized seat of AutoCAD, and thus leverage their present CAD investment in a cost-effective fashion."
