LAS VEGAS, May 5 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced the Visio® Solution Pack for Novell Directory Services™ (NDS), a tool that enhances the network design and documentation capabilities of Visio Professional 5.0 for NDS users. Visio and Novell Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVL) partnered to create the Solution Pack for NDS to minimize the time network managers spend implementing and upgrading directory-enabled networks by providing a clear, hierarchical, graphical view of those networks. With Visio Professional 5.0 and the Solution Pack for NDS, existing directory trees can be automatically diagrammed in Visio and new or updated trees can be exported to Novell's NDS database. The Visio Solution Pack for NDS provides users with the only low-cost, drag-and-drop technology solution for representing Novell directory trees, thereby facilitating efficient structure and deployment of NDS networks.
"More and more network managers are updating their organizations' increasingly complex networks and Internet infrastructures with directory services," said Ted Johnson, co-founder and chief technology officer at Visio. "Our Solution Pack for NDS is a natural extension of Visio Professional's commitment to be the graphical standard for designing and documenting networks, enabling a single, global, graphical view of users and resources on a network."
Visio will be demonstrating the Visio Solution Pack for NDS this week at NetWorld+Interop in Visio's Booth 5017 and in the Novell Partner Pavilion, Booth 3943.
Implementing a successful NDS system requires that multiple departments work together to establish a centralized container with information about users, passwords, groups, servers, volumes and applications. Similarly, proper NDS design is essential to guarantee reliability, availability and performance of the new network system. Visio's flexible graphical tool enables the planning, design and communication among key groups by providing an organizational view of users and resources on the network.
"Increasing concern about the lack of standards and the escalating management costs of dispersed desktops are spurring demand for corporatewide directory services such as Novell's NDS," said Richard Villars, director of network software research at International Data Corp. "Companies can't leverage these directories, however, if they can't easily design, deploy and maintain them. Products such as Visio's graphical NDS solution will make it possible for network managers to efficiently plan and implement extensive NDS networks."
The Visio Solution Pack for NDS was created with the guidance of Novell Consulting Services and the NDS Developer Alliance Division; it is based on Novell's design principles, which provide best practices for structuring NDS trees. The pack provides the design support of both top and bottom levels of the NDS tree, assisting NDS customers in accurately planning, designing and maintaining NDS solutions.
"The unique architecture of NDS allows for unlimited design possibilities, and we are excited to have such an easy-to-use solution available for implementation assistance," said Michael Simpson, director of marketing at Novell Inc. "The Visio Solution Pack for NDS provides simple guidelines and graphical tools to maximize efficiency and availability in tree design and implementation."
The Visio Solution Pack for NDS contains a set of over 40 SmartShapes® symbols to represent Novell's standard NDS container and leaf objects. Each shape includes the custom properties, or attributes, like login name and network address that are necessary to create new objects in the NDS database.
Combining the pack with Visio Professional 5.0, users can create an organizational view of NDS structure, including the important peer-to-peer relationships that cannot be seen in a horizontal tree view. In addition, Visio can read and write to the NDS database through Novell's VImport and VExport utilities. The VExport utility creates a snapshot of objects existing in a directory tree as an editible, delimited text file that Visio can read for automatic diagramming. It also provides much needed filtering for large trees. The VImport utility translates new and updated objects from a Visio diagram into an editable, delimited text file that can be read by the NDS database. The pack also provides an online help file that describes Novell's NDS design principles, ensuring correct and efficient planning for new and updated directory trees.
With the Visio Solution Pack for NDS, Visio offers network professionals a complete network design and documentation tool set. Visio Professional 5.0 streamlines the creation and tracking of LANs, WANs and telecommunications infrastructures through its easy-to-use interface, connectivity to ODBC-compliant databases, and customizability for specific network-design needs. Visio Network Equipment is the most complete and detailed network equipment library available, providing over 12,000 exact replica vendor-specific shapes representing equipment from more than 300 network manufacturers.
This comprehensive tool set offers network professionals an affordable solution for designing, implementing and maintaining their constantly changing computer and communications networks. In addition, Visio Professional and its add-ons are easy to implement and extensible for use with other network management tools.
