Visio Announces Availability of Highly Anticipated Windows-Based CAD Application

IntelliCAD 98 by Visio the First Low-Cost, Compatible Alternative to Autodesk AutoCAD

CHICAGO, March 16 /PRNewswire/ — At the National Design Engineering Show (NDES) in Chicago today, Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) announced the release of IntelliCAD® 98 by Visio, its 32-bit Windows-based CAD application that offers unprecedented compatibility with AutoCAD files, commands and applications. Visio will demonstrate IntelliCAD 98 at booth 6026 during NDES (March 16-19) and will make IntelliCAD 98 available for purchase at an introductory estimated price of $349 (U.S.) through retail and distribution channels, as well as direct from Visio, before the end of March. Visio is releasing IntelliCAD 98 for distribution after completion of a successful testing program that encompassed over 3,000 beta testers worldwide.

"We're excited to bring IntelliCAD 98 to the marketplace as the first affordable, viable alternative to AutoCAD," said John Forbes, vice president, technical products at Visio. "All Visio® products are intended to further our goal of becoming the standard for creating, storing and exchanging valuable drawings in business. IntelliCAD 98 is Visio's first step in creating high-value products in the CAD area, and it signals Visio's commitment to participate for the long term within this market space."

"IntelliCAD is at the vanguard of an industry trend of providing increasing functionality within the low-cost CAD space," said Sharon Tan, senior industry analyst at Dataquest. "Visio may well prove that demand for traditional 2-D CAD software is not price inelastic."

Beta Testers Satisfied

Since publicly announcing the IntelliCAD beta program in November, Visio has engaged over 3,000 beta testers to put IntelliCAD through its paces. Seasoned AutoCAD users have tested IntelliCAD 98 with their own .dwg drawings, AutoLISP routines, macros, menu files, and custom ADS-based C++ applications. The feedback from testers has been instrumental in helping Visio fulfill its promise of AutoCAD-like functionality and compatibility, at less than 20 percent of the price of AutoCAD. Further, these testers were able to provide valuable feedback on productivity enhancements that are not present in AutoCAD Release 14, such as IntelliCAD's Multiple Document Interface for editing multiple drawings simultaneously, Microsoft ActiveX in-place editing capabilities (as both a server and a client) and the Drawing Explorer™, an intuitive tool for managing drawing layers, line types and blocks. The IntelliCAD testing and quality assurance effort has resulted in IntelliCAD 98 being awarded the Designed for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT logo certification from Microsoft Corp.

"I've been using IntelliCAD 98 with my libraries of .dwg files with absolutely no problem. IntelliCAD also flawlessly runs every one of hundreds of LISP programs I've tested," said Tony Tanzillo, design automation consultant and co-author of "Maximizing AutoCAD R13/R14." "IntelliCAD's uncompromising compatibility, robust customization support and low cost make it a no-brainer for companies that want to install more CAD seats than the high cost of AutoCAD allows them. IntelliCAD's total cost of ownership is also significantly less than that of AutoCAD LT 97."

While maintaining compatibility with legacy data and applications, IntelliCAD 98 also includes other innovative features that enhance and extend the AutoCAD work environment. These enhancements include a preview implementation of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), a visual menu editor for easy customization of AutoCAD-compatible menu structures, a Script Recorder that captures the user's actions for automated replay and a drag-and-drop button bar editor that easily creates fly-out structures on toolbars. IntelliCAD 98 also includes other advanced features such as context-sensitive right-click editing of selected entities, photorealistic ray-traced rendering and enhanced plotter device support.
