Visio Ships Preview of IntelliCAD Software

Prerelease Version of Autodesk AutoCAD-Compatible Software Garners More Than 2,000 Testers

SEATTLE, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) announced today that it has begun shipping the preview version of IntelliCAD® by Visio, its 32-bit Microsoft Windows-based CAD application that offers unprecedented compatibility with Autodesk AutoCAD files, commands and applications.

To date, more than 2,000 CAD testers have signed up to participate in the IntelliCAD preview program. They are receiving an early opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the way that IntelliCAD handles legacy AutoCAD data and to discover for themselves how IntelliCAD enhances the drafting productivity of AutoCAD users. Visio will continue to process qualified preview applicants from the general public via its Web site at http://www.visio.com/intellicad/ through the end of December.

"We're excited that so many CAD users want to try out IntelliCAD and see how it handles their legacy data," said John Forbes, vice president and general manager, technical products at Visio. "We believe that the greater the number of people who take it upon themselves to 'reality-check' our claims, the more people will become convinced that Visio is truly offering an affordable alternative to AutoCAD that maintains compatibility with legacy data."

The IntelliCAD preview allows CAD users to experiment with the IntelliCAD software at no charge. With the preview, participants can try out the IntelliCAD software with the AutoCAD files they use in everyday work. The following are some areas that AutoCAD users are likely to test extensively:

  • .dwg integrity. IntelliCAD uses the AutoCAD R14 .dwg as its native file format, eliminating the need to translate data. For those features in AutoCAD R14 that Visio has chosen not to support (such as ACIS-based 3-D solid modeling), users should determine whether the AutoCAD-generated .dwg files that use those unsupported features will maintain their integrity after being modified in IntelliCAD. The IntelliCAD software has been designed to fully and safely "round trip" all data entities found in the R14 .dwg file format, even those that IntelliCAD does not use.
  • Command-line syntax. IntelliCAD supports the same command-line interface that AutoCAD users have used for years to draft their drawings. AutoCAD users will feel immediately comfortable within the IntelliCAD environment, with no retraining required.
  • AutoLISP support. IntelliCAD fully supports AutoLISP, allowing users to run their custom scripts unmodified. AutoCAD users run thousands of AutoLISP routines each day to enhance their drafting productivity, and IntelliCAD lets those users bring that customization forward into a modern Windows-based environment.
  • Multiple-document interface. Currently, AutoCAD users are restricted to one drawing per instance of AutoCAD loaded in memory. With IntelliCAD, users have a modern multiple-document interface that allows multiple drawings to be opened and edited within a single instance of the application.

The general public in the United States may sign up to participate in the preview via an electronic form posted on Visio's Web site at http://www.visio.com/intellicad/. Preview participants are not obligated to provide Visio with testing feedback, but they are encouraged to contribute their suggestions and report bugs. The preview will operate until Jan. 31, 1998. Visio plans to ship the final version of IntelliCAD before the end of the first quarter of 1998.
