SAN FRANCISCO, May 13 /PRNewswire/ — InfoModelers, Inc. and Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced a relationship to increase the efficiency of database modeling by developing a link between two leading database modeling products, InfoModeler® and Visio® Professional. Import capabilities in InfoModeler will enable database designers and administrators to extend the value of their Visio database designs and allow full model editing and analysis. Together, the tools will provide an effective and low-cost toolset for database design and the graphical rendering of database models. Both companies are exhibiting at DB/Expo '97, being held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, May 12-15.
InfoModelers, Inc. has also announced its intention to become a Visio Business Partner as well as a member of the Business Process Management Coalition (BPMC). The BPMC was developed last year by Visio and eight leading software companies and industry experts to promote the interoperability of products and techniques used in all phases of business process management. "The partnership between InfoModelers and Visio gives database professionals the best of both worlds," said Tom Van Horn, president and CEO of InfoModelers, Inc. "A significant percentage of Visio's 1.3 million customers use Visio to design database models, but many of them need a more powerful data modeling product to refine their models and generate a wide range of database schemas. The link between Visio Professional and InfoModeler allows them the additional technology they need, while preserving their original work created using Visio."
Visio Professional is Visio's product designed for IS/IT professionals to document their information systems, such as databases and networks, and map them to company business processes. The product currently includes capabilities for reverse-engineering ODBC-compliant databases and generating a Microsoft Access database from Visio diagrams, wizards for linking diagrams to databases, and SmartShapes® symbols for a dozen software and database design methodologies.
InfoModeler 3.0 is InfoModelers, Inc.'s state-of-the-art visual design tool for database developers and users. Later this summer, InfoModeler 3.0 will be enhanced to import Visio database designs, offering Visio customers automatic client/server and desktop database schema generation, project and team support, and the capability to augment conceptual and logical models. In addition, InfoModeler will return metafiles to Visio, allowing the user to edit designs for documentation purposes. In future versions of Visio Professional, Visio plans to provide a new set of Object Role Modeling (ORM) templates, based on the conceptual modeling methodology employed by InfoModeler.
"As Visio strengthens its influence in the database design market, it is important for us to partner with established yet innovative players such as InfoModelers," said Ted Johnson, vice president and chief technology officer at Visio. "Relationships such as this will provide Visio Professional the support necessary to become the standard tool for database design in addition to supporting our corporate mission of becoming the single standard for creating, storing and exchanging drawings in business."
Both the Enterprise and Personal editions of InfoModeler 3.0 with support for Visio Professional will be available in July 1997. InfoModeler 3.0, Enterprise Edition lists for $3,195 and supports a full range of client/server and desktop databases. The Personal Edition, which supports leading desktop databases, lists for $695.
