Visio Ships Visio Professional as First Third-Party Application to Include Visual Basic, Applications Edition

Visio Professional Sets Course as Component-Based Visualization Tool for Information Technology Professionals

SEATTLE, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced the availability of Visio® Professional 4.5, the Windows®-based graphics software product leading the new generation of component-based software. The latest addition to Visio's product line of enterprise drawing and diagramming applications, Visio Professional extends the graphics capabilities of the flagship Visio product to enable IT professionals to execute the critical tasks of visualizing, aligning and managing their corporation's information systems and business processes.

"As Visio is an established leader in exploiting Microsoft® technologies, we are thrilled that it has become the first ISV to provide Visual Basic®, Applications Edition to its customers by shipping Visio Professional," said Jon Roskill, director of Visual Basic marketing at Microsoft Corp. "By adding VBA, Visio Professional now delivers ActiveX™ component-based development, enhancing the efficiency and productivity of corporate developers in creating custom, Visio-based solutions."

Visio Professional is intended for use by professionals in areas such as network documentation and management, Internet/intranet mapping, database design and data flow analysis, application development, business process re-engineering and workflow design. The product allows all IT professionals to use a comprehensive tool to unify their information technology, process management and applications development under a single, powerful visualization system.

"Visio Professional is the first software tool to address the issue of aligning business with technology infrastructure — one of the most essential tasks for an IT professional today," said Peter Mullen, general manager of Visio business products at Visio. "Many times, this task involves customizing a solution to provide simulation capabilities, use legacy data or interact with the Internet. Incorporating VBA puts us a step ahead in providing users with the capabilities they need to effectively match company processes to company technology, and subsequently to increase value to their customers."

The addition of VBA brings to Visio Professional an integrated programming environment that will facilitate and streamline custom applications running within the product. This is the same development environment within Microsoft Office 97 and the upcoming version of Visual Basic 5.0. As a result, any of the 3 million developers actively creating applications with Visual Basic and VBA can be immediately productive in programming Visio Professional. Corporate developers, systems integrators and VARs who use VBA in Visio Professional will experience performance increases and be required to write less code. They will also experience tighter control of the Visio environment and assistance in selecting and implementing Visio Interface methods. Since VBA code is part of the Visio Professional drawing, the distribution of Visio solutions is made easier.

With the inclusion of VBA, Visio Professional exposes ActiveX object models that developers can manipulate to create solutions based on ActiveX technology. Additionally, users can integrate Visio Professional diagrams into Web browsers so data managed by Visio Professional becomes accessible as Web pages. This lets a user navigate and edit Visio Professional diagrams on a corporate intranet within the Web browser. Also, Visio Professional diagrams can easily be published to Web pages by converting the diagrams into HTML-supported formats such as GIF and JPEG.

Visio Professional capitalizes on other new Microsoft technologies, providing support for Windows NT® 4.0, an identical look and feel to the new Office 97 applications, and support for the new IntelliMouse™, giving users a more intuitive way to navigate their diagrams.

A 32-bit application, Visio Professional has a U.S. estimated street price of $349. The product is currently available directly from Visio Corp. as well as from leading national distributors, corporate resellers and retail channels. To place an order or to obtain more information on any Visio product, customers can contact Visio at 800-24-VISIO (248-4746), ext. 93W.
