ATLANTA, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) and Optimal Networks Corp. today announced Optimal's development of automated network discovery technology which will interoperate with Visio's network diagramming tools to provide a powerful solution for the discovery, analysis and design of enterprise networks. In response to user demand for greater ease of use and a higher degree of automation in network diagramming tools, Optimal Networks has enhanced its Optimal Surveyor® topology discovery and analysis tool to export collected data directly into Visio®, Visio Technical and Visio Professional graphics products.
Visio (Booth 6874) and Optimal Networks (Booth 5608) each will demonstrate product interoperability at NetWorld+Interop, being held Sept. 18-20 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
In recent installed-base research, Visio found that more than half of the company's 800,000-plus users already use Visio for their network diagramming needs. In addition, 14 percent of Visio users create network diagrams more often than any other drawing.
"Although our new product, Visio Professional, will better serve our networking customers' needs with functionality such as vendor-specific network equipment SmartShapes® symbols, advanced database connectivity and network design productivity enhancements, we realize that we need the help of established partners to deepen Visio's usage in this market," said Gary Gigot, vice president of worldwide products at Visio Corp. "Automated network discovery is a commonly requested feature that will help save time and make a networking professional's job easier. Our relationship with Optimal Networks combined with Visio Professional's network-specific enhancements will further our goal to become the standard for network design."
Optimal Surveyor is a multiprotocol topology discovery and analysis tool that creates models of the logical interconnectivity of a network. Using SNMP to discover the topology of routed IP, IPX and VINES networks, as well as the logical connectivity of bridged and switched networks, Optimal Surveyor builds a complete graphic model of the network, and a unique Topology Browser allows a variety of views of the network that can then be edited. The resulting network maps modeled by Optimal Surveyor provide an accurate, current diagram of network elements and allow the network manager to see the network as it exists. Editing features allow network managers to see previews of "what-if" designs and changes to their network's topology.
"By combining Visio's superior graphics-handling capabilities with the ability of Optimal Surveyor to automatically discover and build comprehensive views of an existing network topology, we can offer network managers the best of both worlds," said Maurice Bailey, president and CEO of Optimal Networks. "The convergence of our technology with Visio will allow network managers to share data between tools and work with Visio's easy-to-use graphics front end, enhancing corporations' efforts to move more smoothly and quickly through the process of mapping and managing a network."
After Optimal Surveyor is used to discover networks, the drawings can be exported to Visio for further manipulation. Users will be able to depict networks more accurately using Visio's networking SmartShapes symbols, which represent scaled physical and logical network shapes that can incorporate relevant data.
Optimal Surveyor with built-in compatibility for Visio can be ordered now for shipment at the end of September 1996. Optimal Surveyor will be available to Visio customers at a discounted price of $4,500 through November 1996. The regular list price of Optimal Surveyor is $5,000. Optimal Surveyor will be sold directly by Optimal Networks and will be available for download from the Optimal Networks Web site at http://www.optimal.com/. Optimal Surveyor will also be highlighted and available for download from the Visio Solutions Library located at http://www.visio.com/solutions/, with required registration through Optimal.
