Visio Announces Agreements with SAP AG

Advances Relationship to Explore Visio's Capabilities as an Integrated Graphical Tool for the R/3 System

SEATTLE, April 17 /PRNewswire/ — Visio today announced the signing of two agreements with SAP AG, including a joint development agreement and a licensing agreement. The joint development agreement formalizes both companies' plans to research how Visio® technology can be used as a graphical tool to display process models in the SAP® R/3™ system. The licensing agreement is for the development of a Visio-hosted process model visualization tool scheduled for release in the June quarter. This Visio-based solution is designed to benefit customers involved in SAP implementations, those contemplating implementation of an SAP software solution, and those interested in gaining SAP expertise and applying it to their company's process-engineering efforts. The R/3 system, SAP AG's market-leading client-server business application suite, provides an enterprisewide computing infrastructure by allowing the integration of data across departments and enabling consistent control of business processes throughout corporations.

"SAP AG's large and fast-growing installed base — which includes many of the world's largest and most prestigious companies — represents a significant opportunity to advance Visio as a strategic part of the enterprise," said Ted Johnson, Visio co-founder and vice president of worldwide products. "The escalation of our strategic development alliance with SAP AG is exciting, as we see great potential for Visio to become the standard graphics front end for bringing the process models in the SAP R/3 system to the Microsoft® Windows® desktop."

The joint development agreement includes a formal commitment of resources on behalf of both parties to explore the utility of Visio technology in the SAP R/3 system. The agreement contemplates the signing of a definitive license agreement before the end of 1996 regarding jointly developed products.

"Visio's powerful graphics engine, support of open standards, and advanced Windows technology, in addition to its recognized ease of use, impressed us as an intuitive instrument for users working with the R/3 Reference Model technology," said Dr. Peter Zencke, executive board member of SAP AG. "We are looking forward to identifying how Visio's technology may be more widely used with R/3 software."
