Hitachi Software Introduces SmartView, Compatible with Visio Product Line

Becomes First Third-Party Imaging Package Based on Visio® Graphics Platform

BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ — Hitachi Software Engineering America, Image and Information Systems Division, today announced the development of SmartView™. SmartView, a complementary add-on software package for the Visio and Visio Technical programs, represents the first third-party image viewing solution developed for the Visio product line.

SmartView allows users to easily integrate raster image data from up to 36 industry-standard file formats. "Raster" data is defined simply as a series of unintelligent pixels that are grouped together to create a picture. Some examples of raster image data commonly used in computer applications are scanned documents, drawings, graphics and photographs.

Within Visio, this image data can be used either as a drafting tool or as a graphical, visual representation of a specific entity in the Visio document. Applications for SmartView may be as sophisticated as combining an aerial photograph with a Visio drawing to create a new development proposal, or including an employee photograph within an organization chart created in Visio. The fundamental benefit that SmartView provides both Visio and Visio Technical users is the ability to enhance communication by making Visio drawings and diagrams more illustrative and descriptive. In addition, SmartView's functionality and ease-of-use allows users to more easily work with different kinds of image data, thus saving time and money compared to other methods.

According to John Forbes, director of product marketing for Visio products, "Visio's support for OLE Automation and our unique SmartShapes technology makes Visio a superb solutions development platform. Hitachi's innovative new software allows Visio users to work with raster images in a wide variety of applications, and further strengthens Visio's emerging position as the worldwide standard for drawing and diagramming in business."

As one of Autodesk's most established developers for the AutoCAD® product line, Hitachi Software has been a leader in imaging and conversion software for more than eight years. According to Yutaka Tanaka, vice president and general manager at Hitachi Software in Boulder, "Visio's OLE compliance offers us a unique opportunity to develop a leading-edge image engine using the most sophisticated Microsoft Foundation tools available, and provide a valuable application to a whole new market."

SmartView, a Windows®-based application, will be available in the first quarter of 1996, directly from Hitachi Software. The retail price for a single user license of SmartView is $199. Corporate licenses and multiple-unit pricing are also available.
