LOS ANGELES, May 26 /PRNewswire/ — Today at the AEC SYSTEMS '99 show in Los Angeles, Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) and Belgium-based BricsNet announced that BricsNet has entered into an OEM agreement with Visio to license the IntelliCAD® by Visio CAD platform for use in its next-generation architectural CAD modeling software, BricsNet Architect™. Scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of 1999, the BricsNet Architect design software offers advanced 3-D architectural modeling, automatic 2-D drawing generation, and built-in cost and quantity analysis. The licensing agreement permits BricsNet to fully integrate IntelliCAD functionality into the BricsNet Architect product, merging BricsNet's proven experience in 3-D architectural modeling technology with IntelliCAD's unsurpassed AutoCAD compatibility and native support for the industry-standard DWG file format. Other terms of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.
"BricsNet has leveraged the power of IntelliCAD's highly programmable architecture, familiar user interface and DWG support to create a best-of-class 3-D modeling tool for AEC designers," said John Forbes, vice president, technical products at Visio. "The combination of the two technologies will permit AEC designers to create sophisticated 3-D models while leveraging those designs across CAD platforms."
"We conceived BricsNet Architect on the notion that IntelliCAD could serve as the basis for an affordable, leading-edge architectural modeling tool," said Dr. Maarten van Emmerik, chief technology officer and executive vice president of Marketing for BricsNet. "We believe that designers want to look beyond debates about CAD platforms and toward deploying architectural design functionality that functions on whatever CAD platform they choose to use. Because of IntelliCAD, we're able to offer a high-end 3-D architectural solution at a very affordable price to the thousands of AEC designers who are familiar with the AutoCAD environment."
Formerly known as Brics, BricsNet has 13 years of experience in creating advanced CAD modeling software. The developer of the technology behind the well-regarded Bentley MicroStation TriForma CAD product, BricsNet has expanded its platform expertise beyond MicroStation to include both Visio® IntelliCAD and Autodesk's AutoCAD. BricsNet anticipates that an AutoCAD 2000 version of BricsNet Architect will be available in the first quarter of 2000, permitting mixed AutoCAD-IntelliCAD design environments where designers can work with their platform of choice while seamlessly exchanging 3-D modeling design data. Based on the industry standard ACIS kernel, BricsNet Architect offers advanced free-form 3-D solid modeling for designing complex buildings and structures. Plans, elevations and sections are generated automatically from a central building model and are updated after a change. Users can work either directly in 3-D or in a conventional 2-D plan view. Innovative features introduced by BricsNet Architect include automatic dimensioning, a topology manager and a roof modeler that further enhances designer productivity. BricsNet Architect is a native Windows application and has an open architecture. Developers, resellers and end users can create add-on applications with Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications.
Visio introduced IntelliCAD 98 in March 1998 to provide users with a safe and affordable way to view, mark up and edit the millions of legacy CAD drawings based the DWG file format that are found in large organizations today. A 32-bit Microsoft Windows-based CAD application that offers unparalleled compatibility with Autodesk AutoCAD files, commands and applications, IntelliCAD supports add-on programs such as BricsNet Architect that enhance and extend the application's basic CAD functionality for specific disciplines, such as architectural design. These programs are written with LISP and a C language interface known as ADS, two commonly used techniques for automating AutoCAD and IntelliCAD.
Unlike the licensing stipulations that many CAD vendors impose on their OEM offerings, the typical Visio OEM arrangement permits the IntelliCAD developer to fully expose the entire functionality of IntelliCAD and does not restrict in any way what IntelliCAD features the CAD developer can provide to the user. And, by incorporating IntelliCAD directly into their products, these developers relieve the customer of the need to purchase a separate, costly CAD engine before the customer can use the vendor's specialized CAD solution.
