SEATTLE, April 23 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) and VerticalNet Inc. (Nasdaq: VERT) today announced one of the first major applications of customized mass marketing to vertical industries over the Internet. The two companies have entered into a groundbreaking co-marketing agreement that will promote Visio's new eVisio™ product to VerticalNet's business-to-business online communities.
The eVisio product — customized, made-to-order drawing and diagramming software configurable via the Internet — supports many industry-specific drawing types that have a high degree of relevance to VerticalNet's online communities. For example, the process engineers in the VerticalNet community that serves the chemical and petrochemical industries use Visio software to document and design physical plant facilities. Through targeted banner advertising, sponsorship and Visio-specific content, users across VerticalNet's 36 communities will be able to learn how eVisio technology can solve the drawing and diagramming problems of their specific industries. Links from VerticalNet to the eVisio Web site ( http://www.evisio.com/ ) will take users directly to the eVisio product configuration that best supports the types of drawings that are commonly employed within those users' industries.
"This partnership is unique in that it will allow Visio's customized software to be marketed to vertical industries in ways that were never before possible," said Mark Walsh, president and CEO of VerticalNet. "Traditional distribution methods focus on providing a limited selection of preconfigured software to broadly defined groups of users. In contrast, VerticalNet will 'community brand' the eVisio products toward very targeted vertical audiences according to how Visio technology is used by others in similar job functions, as well as show examples of value-added uses of Visio drawings."
VerticalNet provides Web-based communities designed to build communities of customers, vendors and experts in narrowly focused industries. Updated daily, these communities offer industry-specific content, including industry news updates and original material written by staff editors, as well as virtual trade shows, employment opportunities, online chats and discussion forums.
The eVisio Web site merges the broad reach of the Internet with the flexible architecture of Visio® technology, enabling customers to configure and then conveniently purchase the diagramming solutions that precisely match their drawing needs. By purchasing Visio drawing software through the eVisio Web site, customers can design their own personal eVisio product to include only the drawing solutions they need. For example, the eVisio Web site offers software developers the option of selecting a variety of eVisio solutions for software documentation and database design, without obliging them to pay for additional bundles of unrelated diagramming capabilities they probably won't use.
"Because of its track record and strong content, VerticalNet is an ideal partner for Visio to reach customers within specific industries and educate them regarding how eVisio technology can increase both the productivity and the effectiveness of their communications," said Jeremy Jaech, president and CEO at Visio. "By linking VerticalNet to eVisio, we're also enabling customers to immediately take action in purchasing the industry-specific drawing solution that is relevant and useful to them."
