Developers to Preview New Visio 2000 Platform at Envision!

Next Generation of Visio Graphics Technology to be Shown at Third Annual Conference

SEATTLE, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced that a prerelease version of the next generation of Visio® graphics software technology will shown at Visio's annual developer conference, Envision!, to be held March 25 — 26 in Chicago. Distributed at the conference, the Visio 2000 developer beta will give conference attendees a head start in creating custom solutions that take advantage of the next-generation functionality and new developer-specific features offered by the upcoming Visio 2000 platform. Envision! will provide developers for Microsoft Windows and Visio customers with hands-on training to make the most of the flexibility and depth of Visio technology.

"The ability to customize Visio technology to solve unique business problems has always been an integral part of the complete Visio product," said Ted Johnson, co-founder and chief technology officer of Visio. "Envision! is a great opportunity for developers and business managers to learn how large organizations are solving real-world problems using Visio technology. By releasing the Visio 2000 developer beta at Envision!, we're ensuring that our customers have the tools, knowledge and resources needed to create their next-generation Visio-based solutions."

Visio products are based on Windows-based intelligent graphics technology that is widely used by both corporate developers and independent software vendors. The Visio 2000 platform sets new standards in functionality, programmability and ease of use and will further strengthen Visio's position as the leading provider of visual communications technology.

Envision! — Third Annual Developer Conference

More than 200 developers and business managers from over 20 countries plan to converge on Chicago's Navy Pier to attend sessions on developing with Visio products and to get their first look at the Visio 2000 developer beta, Visio's next-generation platform for graphical development. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness demonstrations and participate in hands-on sessions that illustrate how Visio technology can be used to address a wide range of business needs, such as sales-force automation and management of manufacturing and distribution processes. In addition to receiving a copy of the Visio 2000 developer beta, each attendee may choose from two conference tracks.

Envision! serves developers' needs by providing them with targeted information. The conference tracks at Envision! have been organized to offer more in-depth sessions for both the developer and business manager communities. The developer track provides software developers with training to create software solutions using Microsoft Visual Basic, Visual Basic for Applications, C or Visual C++. The developer track will also consist of technical discussions on the use of COM, database connectivity and development methodology, with an emphasis on the new functionality being made available to developers in Visio 2000. The business manager track is aimed at technology evaluators, business managers and Visio enthusiasts with demonstrations on real-world examples of how users have solved business problems with customized Visio technology products.

Conference and Technology Integration With Microsoft

To better meet the interests and scheduling needs of attendees, many of whom also develop with Microsoft technology, Envision! has been scheduled to follow the Microsoft Office and VBA Solutions Conference (MOVS), set for March 22 — 24 in Chicago. Visio became the first third-party developer to ship a VBA-enabled product in 1997. Subsequently, the presence of Visual Basic for Applications in the Visio platform has allowed corporate developers to integrate intelligent graphics functionality into custom solutions being built on top of standard desktop applications, such as those in Microsoft Office.

"We're delighted that Visio has decided to link its annual developers conference to the Microsoft Office and VBA Solutions Conference," said Neil Charney, lead product manager, Microsoft Corp. "Visio has consistently shown developers how to graphically connect multiple VBA-enabled applications. Now with Envision! taking place back to back with MOVS, developers for Office and VBA have a convenient opportunity to learn about the benefits of developing with Visio products."

Registering for the Conference

To register for Envision!, developers can visit the Envision! online registration site at, or they may call 800-884-6367 in the United States and Canada. A savings incentive of $100 is offered to developers who attend both MOVS and Envision!.
