Visio Volume Licensing Leads the Way to Record Number of New Seats in First Quarter Fiscal 1999

License Customers Purchasing Visio During the Quarter Include Boeing, Commonwealth Edison, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Lucent, MCI WorldCom, TRW

SEATTLE, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) announced that a record 272,000 new units of Visio® software were sold during the first quarter of its 1999 fiscal year, bringing its customer base to nearly 2.8 million users. In addition, more than half of the new seats for the quarter came from volume license agreements, accounting for 36 percent of total revenue in the quarter. This increase in volume purchases of Visio technology underscores the need for a standard drawing platform for general business users, engineers and IT professionals within the enterprise.

"Visio's technology spans the enterprise, addressing drawing and diagramming needs for a broad range of users and solutions — from out-of-the-box use to highly customized mission-critical applications," said Gary Gigot, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Visio. "As more large organizations standardize on Visio technology, we are seeing the increasing transition of our business from the single-box sale through the distribution channel to multiple-seat sales through our volume-licensing channel."

To better serve large organizations, Visio continues to build its top-flight, worldwide corporate sales force by adding salespeople and specialists such as sales engineers and consultants to help drive adoption of, and facilitate solution development using, Visio technology.

Standardizing on Visio

The large organizations that license Visio products represent a variety of industries: aerospace, banking, computer software, financial services, government, insurance, petrochemicals, retail, system integration, telecommunications and utilities. Companies such as Lucent Technologies Inc., MCI WorldCom Inc. and The Boeing Company continued steadily last quarter to purchase licenses and to deploy Visio technology throughout their organizations. Customers that have recently signed corporate licenses with Visio include Commonwealth Edison, TRW Inc., Kmart Corp. and Fred Meyer Inc.

In the December quarter, Visio Technical had a significant win with the Siemens Semiconductor Group, which standardized on the product, choosing it over 10 other drawing packages. Siemens is currently rolling out the product in its European locations and plans to implement Visio Technical as the standard drawing tool for Siemens HL locations around the world.

IT Segment Key to Expanding Corporate Licenses

Visio's focus on the information technology (IT) market is key to its volume licensing initiative. The IT segment offers a huge potential for Visio to deepen its market penetration. Many IT professionals who are involved in deploying applications across the enterprise also use Visio products. Their understanding of the technology is therefore high, which helps increase their willingness to recommend enterprisewide deployment.

Research conducted in 1998 by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) shows that there are 3.35 million IT professionals in the United States, including programmers, systems analysts and computer engineers. Using CompPro queries, Visio has determined that an estimated 2.7 million of these have networking, database management or software development needs that could be met by Visio Professional or Visio Enterprise. Estimates of the worldwide IT market range between 6 million and 7 million IT professionals, which could double ITAA's U.S. market projections for Visio products.
