SEATTLE, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ — Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) today announced that, following an independent competitive analysis, Siemens Semiconductor Group has chosen Visio® Technical as its standard for the creation of electronic, electrical and technical drawings and schematics around the world. Siemens Semiconductor Group commissioned the extensive competitive analysis from an independent consultant for the purpose of testing Visio Technical against 10 other drawing packages from well-known competitors.
"Visio emerged as the overall winner because of its rich feature set and filtering capabilities," said Hansjoerg Sonnleitner, director of information technology, on behalf of the decision-making committee at Siemens Semiconductor Group. "We needed a schematics drawing tool that was easy to use and maintain and that could work effectively within the Microsoft Windows environment. While the other products tested also had strengths and weaknesses, Visio Technical addressed our needs more directly and offered the most interesting combination of features. Excellent import filters give us the chance to reuse existing drawings designed with various tools."
Siemens Semiconductor Group has initially purchased approximately 1,350 copies of Visio Technical 5.0 and approximately 1,000 upgrades for the existing Visio Technical 4.0 seats purchased by the group in 1997. The company plans to roll out implementation of the product throughout all its European locations immediately, and plans are under way to implement Visio Technical as the standard drawing tool for all the Siemens HL locations around the world.
"We are very pleased that Siemens has chosen Visio Technical as the drawing standard for its semiconductor business, especially after such a thorough analysis," said John Forbes, vice president and general manager, technical products at Visio. "More and more companies like Siemens are choosing Visio Technical as the standard for their technical drawing and diagramming needs, and we look forward to building on our relationship with such notable companies to ensure the continuous innovation and enhancement of our product line."
Visio Technical pioneered the technical diagramming category with its launch in December 1994 and has since secured more than 330,000 users worldwide. Visio Technical is largely favored due to its unique drag-and-drop approach to drawing and its offering of more than 3,800 intelligent SmartShapes® symbols that enable users to create a wide range of drawings and diagrams, including building and industrial control schematics, process plant designs, space plans, mechanical and electrical schematics, fluid power, facilities management and HVAC drawings.
Visio Technical also bridges the gap between engineering and CAD, working seamlessly with CAD tools such as Autodesk AutoCAD and the new IntelliCAD® 98 by Visio. Users can import IntelliCAD 98 and AutoCAD .dwg files as either editable or display-only objects. Using Visio Technical's SmartShapes symbols and annotation capabilities, users can then annotate the .dwg drawing embedded within the Visio document.
